Kyneton

Historic · Relaxed · Good for couples

Piper Street is the reason: a bluestone strip of restaurants, a distillery and shops that fills up on a Saturday and empties by Sunday lunch. A river walk and the Macedon Ranges right behind it. A day, or an overnight built around dinner.

A weekend here might look like

  • Morning: Piper Street - Kyneton's oldest street, a run of bluestone shopfronts from the 1850s and 60s now holding galleries, antique and homewares shops, cafes and some of the best eating in the Macedon Ranges. It runs from Mollison Street down to the Campaspe River, with most of the food and drink clustered at the top end.
  • Lunch: Prato
  • Afternoon: Hanging Rock - A cluster of tall volcanic pillars rising out of farmland north of Woodend, best known through Picnic at Hanging Rock. The summit track is short and steep, 30 to 50 minutes up through the boulders, and entry is charged per car at the gate; the trail closes on extreme fire danger days and when winds top 40 km/h.

More to explore

  • Kyneton Botanic Gardens - Gardens reserved in 1858, with wide lawns sloping down to the Campaspe River and a heavy planting of old oaks, elms and ash. Seventeen trees here are on the National Trust's significant register, among them an unusual Chilean wine palm.
  • Campaspe River Walk - An easy gravel path along the river from Langley Street, near the Mollison Street bridge, out to the racecourse. It runs about 3.5 km each way, takes up to two hours return, and passes the botanic gardens, a sculpture park and a stretch of platypus habitat with signs explaining what you are looking at.
  • Country Cob Bakery - Kyneton - Follow the smell of warm pastry to Kyneton's most celebrated bakery. Brothers Chan and Ryan Khun have been named makers of Australia's Best Pie more than once, and their cabinet is a delight: golden pepper steak alongside inventive fillings inspired by their Cambodian roots. Grab one warm and linger, or take a box for the road.
  • Fook Shing - Named after a Gold Rush-era Chinese detective, Fook Shing brings fresh, vibrant Southeast Asian share plates to Kyneton's Piper Street. Settle in by the fire or out on the deck, pair your meal with a local wine or cocktail, and let the warm, knowledgeable team guide your order. Or simply sit back and enjoy the banquet.
  • Social Foundry - Great coffee with a feel-good twist. Social Foundry is a not-for-profit café on Kyneton's Mollison Street, where every order helps mentor local young people. Settle into the roomy, industrial-style space or head outside. There's a seasonal brunch menu with vegetarian and gluten-free choices, and a friendly team who'll make you want to come back.
  • Little Swallow Cafe - Step inside this cosy café on Kyneton's heritage Piper Street and you'll feel right at home. Little Swallow serves hearty brekkie and lunch built on seasonal, local produce, with a specials board worth a look and plenty of veggie options. Top-notch coffee, a warm, welcoming team and a sun-filled historic space make it a favourite with locals and road-trippers alike.
